Have your say on the future of councils in Devon

Devon is undergoing a major transformation in how local government works.

The number of Devon councils is due to be reduced as part of UK Government proposals to create ‘empowered, simplified, resilient and sustainable’ unitary authorities. This means that the current district and county council model will be replaced by a unitary council, responsible for delivering all services within a particular area; a new Devon.

Devon County Council would like to hear about what’s important to you and how you think Devon’s councils and services could be structured to ensure the best services for all people in Devon.

Have your say by 14th October 2025.

Help Shape Devon’s Future

South Hams District Council need your help to shape the future of local government in Devon by letting them know what matters to you.
In December 2024, Government set out its intention that all areas with two levels of local government (District and County Councils) were required to develop plans for a single level of Government.
In March 2025, a proposal setting out initial thoughts on the future of local government in Devon was submitted on behalf of all the Devon District Councils, except Exeter. Now final proposals are being prepared and are due to be submitted to the Government in November.
Now, everyone with a connection to the South Hams is being asked what matters to them to help shape our final proposals so they reflect the needs and aspirations of people living and working in the area.
The short survey can be found on the SHDC website at:
https://www.southhams.gov.uk/…/local-government… which also has more information on local government reorganisation, including Frequently Asked Questions.
Over the next few months, a series of engagement events around South Hams will also be taking place with residents, towns and parish councils and other organisations. Details on how you can get involved will be available soon.

What is 159?

159 is a UK-wide telephone number that you can use to contact your bank’s fraud department. It works similar to how 111 is used for the NHS and 101 for non-emergency calls to the police. Calling 159 allows you to speak to someone from your bank’s fraud team. They can help you check on potential scams, and verify the legitimacy of a call or message you may have received claiming to come from your bank. You can also use this number for added reassurance, prior to taking part in any new financial transaction.

If you receive a suspicious call or message, involving any type of financial transaction, including those claiming to be from your bank, your telecoms provider, HRMC, the police, STOP. Then call 159 to check on the call or messages authenticity. If you are making the call in response to an incoming telephone call, ideally dial 159 from a different phone to ensure the scammer can’t intercept or redirect your call. If you only have one phone available to use, wait a short while, then phone a friend who’s voice you will recognise. This ensures that you phone line is now clear. Then call 159.

159 is a safe and secure way to contact your bank, helping to protect you from financial fraud. The service is supported by major UK banks and telecommunications companies.

159 will never call you.

Annual Parish Meeting – 21st May 2025

The Annual Parish Meeting of Thurlestone Parish will take place on Wednesday, 21st May 2025 in Thurlestone Parish Hall at 7.00 pm.
This is not be confused with the Parish Council meeting – it’s an annual meeting for the electors of the parish and is intended to be a useful forum for the local community to discuss parish affairs and hear about all that’s gone on in the parish over the past year. This is an excellent opportunity to engage with the community, by providing a space where members of the public can share their views or where local organisations can promote their work.  We look forward to seeing you there.
